Immunize Kansas Coalition (IKC) and immunization partners are working to better identify, understand, and meet the diverse needs of communities in Sedgwick (Wichita, KS) and Sumner Counties. Hispanic or Latino individuals represent 15.7% of the population of those counties.
To expand their reach and better understand this region of the state, IKC's Community Health Specialist (CHS), Marixendra Alvarez, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, provides grassroots educational outreach to communities. She has attended many local events, tabling with educational resources to reach different audiences in the counties she serves. During the back-to-school season, Marixendra attended “Together Sedgwick”, an event full of vendors and organizations throughout the Wichita metro. As she provided educational immunization resources, attendees could also receive a vaccine, administered by the local health department. In mid-September, she took part in two diverse events. At "Open Streets ICT", IKC's booth was placed next to the event’s multicultural entertainment, attracting a diverse group of people, and reaching over an estimated 30,000 individuals. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Marixendra hosted a table at “Latin Fest ICT”, an event featuring representation from various Latino populations including Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Puerto Rico, and more! The event was full of diverse conversation, food, music, and other non-profit organizations.
This year, Marixendra and IKC’s Community Health Specialists promoted IKC at the Kansas State Fair! This ten-day event was an excellent opportunity for IKC to share their mission, provide educational resources, and engage with community members from across the state.
IKC’s Community Health Specialists are committed to developing engaging and creative outreach events that cater to the diverse communities they serve, addressing their needs to keep them educated and protected against vaccine-preventable diseases in Kansas!
