dia de la mujer conferences
In late October, Immunize Kansas Coalition (IKC) and partners hosted Entre Mujeres: The Health of Women a premier event for women, young people, and men of all ages in southwest Kansas. The event was supported by 13 sponsors and exhibitors and brought in more than 50 individuals across the region!

To best reach members within the community, the conference was Spanish-language predominant with interpretation provided in both English and Spanish.

The event kicked off with moderator Angelica Castillo Chappel welcoming all to Entre Mujeres. The first guest speaker, Trish Miller, MD, shared early detection strategies and screening methods for breast cancer. Following Dr. Miller, Alex Titus DNP, APRN, FNP-BC discussed prevention and early detection approaches to cervical cancer through screenings and a special emphasis on how the HPV vaccine can protect both women and men against HPV-related cancers.

During the event, there was a special tribute honoring cancer survivors in attendance. To conclude the program, IKC Community Health Specialists, Lucy Watie and Patricia Fierro gave heartfelt recognition to their local promotoras de salud (community health promoters) for the many dedicated hours of support and service they’ve given to their communities. When asked about her promotoras, Lucy shared, “This group means the world to me. They’re hard-working, dedicated, and super empathetic — always ready to jump in and help whenever needed. They’ve been an amazing support over the past year and a half, truly following their calling of service.”

Congratulations to the promotoras de salud who earned their Kansas Community Health Worker (CHW) Certification!

Following the program, attendees visited exhibit tables and snapped pictures at the photo booth. After learning about how the HPV vaccine protects against six different cancers, community members had the opportunity to receive an immunization on-site provided by the Finney County Health Department!

Entre Mujeres’ impact was made possible through collaboration, supportive community partners, and the dedication of IKC’s local Community Health Specialists.

    dia de la mujer conferences

IKC's Entre Mujeres: The Health of Women builds on the success of the "Dia de la Mujer Latina" conferences held in October in Garden City and Liberal, Kansas! Both events had a great turnout, reaching over 275 Latina women. We gathered together to honor cancer survivors, learned the importance of HPV vaccination in preventing cancers, and listened to the “Ni uno Mas” campaign from El Centro, Inc. Both conferences had inspirational speakers including cancer survivor Helen Ortiz, motivational public health equity advocate, Julissa Sosota, and more!

We also honored two members of the Garden City and Liberal communities, Norma Fraire and Victoria Bangs for their outreach efforts within their communities, receiving the "Making A Difference" award.
