New NIS-Child (National Immunization Survey-Child) vaccination data were recently released for the 2021 birth year/cohort. Check out the data on the interactive ChildVaxView tool. In this email, we'll briefly summarize the DTaP, Polio, MMR, Hib, HepB, Varicella, PCV, HepA, and Rotavirus vaccination rates for Kansas and show where we're at now compared to previous years.
In summary, Kansas reflected national vaccination coverage rates for children aged 0-24 months. Kansas data showed increases in all but one recommended vaccine compared to the previous year and ranked in the Top 10 for two vaccines compared to the other 50 states. 🌟 See additional details below. We will continue to monitor trends and work together to promote vaccines in Kansas!
In a recent article, the CDC shares that "childhood immunizations continue to provide substantial health and economic benefits." Estimating the specific impacts of the last decade, "among [U.S.] children born during 1994–2023, routine childhood vaccinations will have prevented approximately 508 million cases of illness, 32 million hospitalizations, and 1,129,000 deaths, resulting in direct savings of $540 billion and societal savings of $2.7 trillion."

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) released new data on the Kindergarten Vaccination Coverage Dashboard for the 2023-2024 school year. On the dashboard, find school-entry vaccination coverage rates for the state and your school district (2019-20 to 2023-24 school years). The dashboard also provides religious and medical exemption rates statewide and by school district. Coverage and exemption data presented are estimates from analysis of school survey data.
